KREEM of SIXTYEIGHT by Paul Kennelly April 13, 2010

Dedicated to the memory of Tom Ryan

We never made it big , my friend , although we worked real hard
playing clubs and ballrooms all around

we worked our act to please the ones, who held the upper card
giving them our special kind of sound

Spring turned into summer , we were young and oh so keen
to be a band that made it in the Rock ‘n Roll machine
but autumn brought the dark clouds that took away our dream
and winter saw us drift apart , that was Pepper Mint Kreem

and then five years later, we did it all again
with operas and light show and all the usual pain
a second chance to make it big , it could have been our day
but the ship of fools came into Port and threw it all away

from Coventry to Leicester , just like troubadours
to Birmingham and Warwick’s music scene

we got ourselves the bookings , by hammering on doors
and all the little villages between

the smoky little social clubs , the dance halls and the bars
broken bottles scattered on the floor

the smell of old tobacco and the wreak of stale beer
yet we would travel miles to get some more

through summer months we did our best to keep upon the road
with vans that often broke down on the way

the old blue bus it did us well , it took a heavy load
then a black van came in and saved the day

the winter time of sixtyeight we did our final gig
at club Elite , on the graveyard shift

for seven nights we played our best , the money wasn’t big
we was burnt out and couldn’t mend the rift
