DINAH’S DINER by Paul Kennelly February 2009

Dinah sits down in the Diner, her home for forty years
a cup of brackish tea , a distant memory ,
thoughts of what may have been , if she had not said no
to the boy who asked to marry her , all those years ago

oh father, you told me “ he ‘aint the one for you….
another one will come along , you’ll see my words are true
so Dinah sat and waited , the young boy moved away
and broken hearted Dinah , sits in lonely heart café’

and as she stirs her beverage, her dreams pass by her mind
of how she may have shared her life , with that boy who was so kind
of where they may have traveled and places never seen
far from “ easy over eggs “ and bacon slices , lean

well, now it’s nearly closing time, there’s no one else around
even on the highway, there’s no one to be found
and poor old Dinah closes up and washes down the hall
cursing fathers picture, that still hangs on the wall

broken hearted Dinah, your left here on your own
and your life has upped and passed you bye

it could have been much finer, if you had left your home
the whole thing brings a tear to the eye
